Antartica is  the fifth largest continent and also holds   the record for the coldest temperature on our  planet which was negative 89.2 degrees celsius,   or negative 128.6 degres farenheit. There's so  much ice in Antarctica that it holds about 70% of   the world's freshwater reserves. That's enough ice  that if it all melted global sea levels would rise   by almost 200 ft. Strangely enough even though it  has so much ice it is considered by scientists to   be the biggest desert and the driest place on  Earth with just a small amount of precipitation   each year this has created a stunning environment  of vast icy windswept plains interrupted by jagged   mountains and rocky outcrops the coastlines go  from frozen walls of ice to the slow moving fronts   of glaciers to dark Pebble beaches and sometimes  soaring cliffs that rise into the clouds at the ends of mountain ranges but one thing is certain,  most of the coastline of Antarctica is buried   beneath ice shelves in fact 95% of the actual  Rocky coastline is hidden away by ice. This is   an important fact for this episode so hold that  figure in the back of your mind. Antarctica was   officially discovered just over 200 years ago on  January the 27th 1820 when a seafaring Russian   Expedition first sighted land in what is now  known as the Fimble ice shelf on the east side   of the continent however according to the history  books before that official Discovery the British Explorer Sir James Cook circumnavigated  the continent in 1772 but according to   the notes he saw it at a distance and concluded  he was only seeing some Stark Rocky islands and   icebergs According to some scientists Antarctica  has lay Frozen beneath the ice for between 15 to   20 million years however evidence has been found  that it underwent a thaw for a short period about   3 million years ago some controversy erupted  after further recent evidence suggested that it   underwent a time of fine between 9,000 BC and  4,000 BC that's the official history that you can learn in any Library enter the mystery of  the per Reese map in 1929 while inspecting old   Scrolls and maps in the Topkapi Palace and museum  in Istanbul Turkey a group of historians came   across a segment of a type of nautical map known  as a Portlolan chart imprinted upon the skin of   a gazelle which has since been dated to the year  1513 what caught their attention immediately were   the depictions of the Atlantic the Caribbean  Americus and Antarctica in accurate detail   subsequent detailed research confirmed that it  was a genuine document drawn in 1513 by Piri Reis, a famous admiral of the Turkish Fleet in the 16th  century who had a particular passion for phography   now this was already mysterious enough given the  accurate mapping of the Americas and Caribbean   just a few years after the discovery by Columbus  but the attention to detail was so precise that   Antarctica was depicted ice free yeah you heard  me right landforms and coastlines were drawn as   if no ice was present zipping forward to present  day the actual mapping of the rock continent under the Antarctic Ice was not fully completed until  the 1980s thanks to developments in echo sounding   Technologies so hold up that's a big brain  twisting mystery here let's summarize Antarctica   today has 95% of its Coast lines buried under ice  shelves according to the currently accepted model   that ice has been there for at least 3 million  years but for the sake of argument let's go with   the very latest research that says that the  ice was greatly reduced between 9,000 BC and   4,000 BC and that's a lot of ice and according to  climatologists much more than that could have been accumulated since the map was drawn in 1513 which  leaves us with one big question where did Admiral   Piri Reis get the information he used to create  the map. According to some researchers he used   at least 20 other sources of nautical map data for  his rendition based on that alone we're left with   the conservative conclusion that the original  mapping that Reis used must have originated   over 6,000 years ago this leads one to wonder if  those sources of information he used dated back   to the ancient lost and forgotten civilization  which some have speculated were the Mariners of Atlantis could Atlantis be located under the ice  of Antarctica does Atlantis even exist or is it   merely a fairy tale told to People by Greek  philosopher Plato.
