When multiple law enforcement officers across Ohio witnessed massive UFOs hovering silently over their communities, their shocked reactions were captured in real time through 911 calls and radio police transmissions. This is a story of one of the most thoroughly documented UFO encounters in history. Told through the authentic voices of dispatchers and officers who confronted something that defied explanation. I'm Cristina Gomez and welcome to this episode of Mysteries with a history. Let me bring in my co-host Jimmy Church of Fade to Black Radio. Jimmy, happy Thursday. We missed you last Thursday. How are you?

I'm back. So good to see you. It is so good to be here. I got to tell you everybody when uh Cristina uh I this is the first time I've seen her. It seems like months and uh I'm just so happy to see your face. Yeah. But uh Cristina uh crazy UFO stuff going down right now. And if anybody's paying attention, you can see what is happening. So, we have that. But here we are. We're going to go back to 1994 today to Trumbull County in Ohio. Um, you said UFO. I'm going to say one of the greatest police chases of all time. It just happens to involve a UFO, right? And we all love a good police chase. But but this case stands head and shoulders above so many cases, but it's not discussed in our community as much as it should be. But what grabbed your attention uh to Trumbull County?

This particular case, as you had mentioned, it is one of the best police chases ever recorded. We have dispatch audio. We have people such as the policeman and the dispatcher come years later and tell their encounter. We have multiple eyewitnesses both from just civilians and policemen as well. It's truly an incredible case. And I think the best part about this one is that very much like Roswell, it was brushed away very, very quickly until one journalist stumbled upon it by accident many years later and then it revived itself once again. Very much like the Roswell incident where Satan Freeman was like, hm, something strange going is going on there.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But you avoided the question though, so I'm going to ask it again. What brought this onto your radar? The internet. Were you just rabbit hauling? Yeah, you were just rabbit holeing, weren't you? The internet. Yeah. Yeah. That's that's my favorite favorite thing to do the other day. And then we're going to jump straight into this case, everybody. It's an amazing case. The other day, I love true crime and I love true crime documentaries and true crime uh podcasts and with what little time that I have, I tend to spend it in true crime. And the other day, I'm not going to say what or anything, but I stumbled upon a true crime case uh that that happened in Johannesburg, South Africa, and never heard about the case. Not. And it was so sensational and so big. And then I got it's four episodes. I got two episodes in like the Trumbull County case. I got two episodes in Cristina on All That I Love. I stood up and said, "This is fake. This is a mockumentary. There is no way that this is real." And then I looked it up. Right. And that's what when you have Trumbull County and you go through this case, it's like where how come I I don't know about it and this can't be real. But it is, isn't it?

And one of the things um we're going to go through this and get it set up right now. One of the things that is most fascinating about this case, you can go through the facts, you can read about it, you can listen to you uh and I talk about it. Go and listen to the 911 dispatch calls. Couple hours, right? Couple hours and go and listen to all of that and you just step step back and go, "Wow, this really happened." So, let's get to it. Let's get to December 14th, uh, 1994. Set the stage.

All right. I'm going to put an image here as a visual aid while we get into this case. There it is. This one took place December 14th, 1994. And really, it sort of like any other night shift for Roy Anne Rudolph, who I will show a picture in just a moment at the Trumbull County 911 Dispatch Center in Warren, Ohio. Who here is from Ohio? Raise your hand. Or if you ever been, I have never been there, but it seems like a kind of like a nice quiet state. But just after midnight, the phone rang with what seemed like a routine call from a civilian reporting an unusual bright light hovering near Liberty Township. And so Royanne's response to this was typical for such calls of like, okay, you know, we'll we'll check it out. We'll call the air base and uh we'll get back to you and maybe maybe we'll get some other reports in the area. And she really just expected it was going to end there. She was going to call the Air Force. They were going to give her an answer and that was it. But the strange part about this particular case that the calls kept coming one after another. Different voices from different locations all describing the same phenomenon. A large bright object with unusual lights hovering silently above Samson Drive near Fifth Avenue.

We know that location. Let me jump in though. Let me jump in. You're leaving out the the biggest thing at this point. Those four or five calls come in. She takes the calls and laughs between them. She's giggling. She's laughing. She's talking to friends in the room. They're all having a laughathon about these calls coming in. That was so telling because her tone changed, didn't it? But there she is there. And I gotta tell you, she was like, "Man, UFOs, another call comes in." And uh yeah, so she's got to turn around and and notify the police about this. But the callers that were calling in were were genuinely panicked and and what they were describing that was phenomenal. Uh Royanne, there she is. there. She's I got to give her a lot of credit. She handled a pretty traumatic night well. Started off giggling, but it got serious really quick, didn't it? And she very quickly became a believer as well. But I don't want to get ahead of myself.

No, let's not get ahead. Let's not get ahead call. No. After the fourth call, Royanne could no longer dismiss all these different phone calls. So then she radioed officer Bob saying, "I swear to God, four calls came in mentioning a UFO over Liberty. Can you go and check this out?" So Bob is going to do that. But right when this is all taking place, these phone calls are coming in. This is all recorded on the dispatch. Then the news does a little does a little ring ring and it's news 33 called seeking information about the reports and Royanne really tried to downplay the situation with with very nervous humor because as Jimmy had mentioned by the second first second third call she's kind of giggling it off. She's like oh these guys are on something. This is too silly. It can't be a UFO. They don't exist. Then the news calls and they ask her, "Well, can we have some information? can we have some news? What's going on? And Royanne just says, "Why the hell would they come to Liberty? There's no intelligent life in Liberty." And that is one of the most famous quotes that she's known for. But despite these jokes, she was professional enough to know that multiple consistent reports from different callers demanded an investigation. And then from that moment on, she's like, "Okay, I need to start really taking this seriously. What's really going on in Liberty?" And that's when she starts making phone calls to different policemen of like, "You need to go check this out, please, immediately. And tell me and tell the callers that they're wrong and that there's nothing to see here, and we live in a nice quiet town in Ohio." But they were all in for a shock. What happened next, Jimmy?

uh officer Sergeant I should say sergeant uh Toby Maloro uh was the first officer on the scene and so he drives down Samson Drive which by the way when you listen to all of the dispatch calls Samson Drive and Fifth Avenue um are repeated constantly. So he drives down Samson Drive to check out the lights and uh a man on the street comes up to him and says, "Dude, it's moving south. The object is moving south." So Malora continued south on Samson Drive. And then his police cruiser dies. As he attempted to restart the vehicle, uh a bright light came from above him and he was scared and he said that he was. He gets out of his car and looks up at the giant object. He said it was circular in shape and was really bright in the center section. He said that after about 30 seconds, the giant object moved away. The most striking things about uh Maloro's sighting was that he heard not a sound from the UFO. Now, when you listen to, excuse me, when you listen to the conversation uh between him and Roy Anne, he said it was giant and it was red. And he said, "I rolled down my window uh to take a better look and I could only hear my car. I couldn't hear it." And he said it was uh about 50 feet off the ground. And it's just crazy when you listen to the sound of his voice. And he wanted to know what other officers were reporting, what the other phone calls were, had she contacted the FAA yet, what is going on at uh the air base nearby. Um and then he even mentions, Cristina, as you said, anybody called Channel 33 yet? And all of this was happening right in a row. Um and then uh Maloro said that uh he took off the uh the UFO uh starts to move and he was unable to keep up with it. He then calls back to dispatch telling him every telling them everything and gave the basic direction of flight.

Now here's the thing. Um uh there's so much to cover here, but 15 officers had seen the UFO. There are 15 uh officers calling into dispatch. When you listen to the 911 uh dispatch recordings uh of which you can listen to a couple of hours of them um listening to each one of these officers call in with their descriptions of of what was going on all over the police radio and um and this was open openly discussed because they were all scared and they were all watching it and then they went that was on the public channel public radio band and then they switched to a private radio band to continue the discussion. um uh when when contacted I'm going to jump ahead just a little bit because one of the interesting parts for me Cristina I know you've got so much more to add but the FAA radar center so Roy an calls that discussion with the FAA which you can hear the entirety of the phone call is one of the most fascinating things I've ever heard when it comes to UFOs and Uh the FAA says to her, "Uh, we've got nothing nothing unusual. We can see 60 miles in diameter around Youngstown." All right. And he says, "Well, man," she goes, "Well, what if it's flying low?" And he goes, "Well, if it's a helicopter or something and it's it's really low, no, we wouldn't be able to see it." She was very direct with her questions. And then he says before I hand it back over to you, he goes, "Man, if you're talking about a UFO and that's what you want to report, you're calling the wrong place." And he goes, "I'll give you some 800 numbers that you can call tomorrow, but you're not going to do it here with me." Wasn't that interesting to listen to, Cristina?

It was. And it's surprising because this one took place in 1994. So there was already interest of UFOs during that time frame. There were already ideas of there being secret projects and UFO like UFO like unnamed UFO offices during that time frame as well. And also Bigalow Airspace was was conducting their UFO investigations during that time frame as well. One thing worth mentioning about Toby before we get on to our next piece that's really important is that Royanne called Toby when he was on his coffee break. And while he is driving to Samson Road to look at this object not too far away from the coffee shop he was at, he sees an elderly man in the middle of the road flaring his arms at the patrol car. And Toby's like, "What? What's going on? Are you okay?" Hey. And he tries to smell his breath for any alcohol, thinking that he's a little under the influence. And the man says there is a ginormous UFO up into like up in the sky. And he didn't see anything. But he so he gets back in the car and he continues driving just about 200 feet more. And that's when he sees it. And that's immediately when he calls dispatch, he calls Royanne and describes the situation. not only a very large UFO but also the lights were pulsating on this craft as well. His he lost all electrical power in his patrol car. The engine died without warning. The radio went silent and every electrical system shut down simultaneously. And then in that moment he get this very bright light descends upon him bathing both his vehicle and himself in this very intense radiant light that he couldn't look directly at. But then it just gets more strange because he's he while this patrol car is no longer working. He's freaking out as you had mentioned Jimmy is he's trying to rationalize what he's seeing and you were able to hear that in the dispatch audio him really trying to take get a grasp of what's going on explaining to the best of his ability as well.

Yeah. He says, "Man, I got to take a minute." He goes, "I'm I'm going offline. I I I've got to take a minute. I I I can't I can't work right now." And then Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And then a few minutes later, he goes, "Okay, I've collected my thoughts. I'm back." And he um and so and one of the things that caused this for him is the craft takes off, but his car is not running and he wants to follow it. As soon as it almost got out of sight about 30 seconds later, his car starts and that's when he takes off and that's when he calls dispatch. He had lost his mind. one of the callers that called in, which I found interesting, and she called in a few times, uh, this, uh, older lady, but she says in the first phone call, she goes, "I don't know, but it was a flying saucer and it was silent and it flew right over the top of me." And Roy Anne goes, "Uh, a what?" Right? You mean a UFO? I I don't know. she said. Now, she described it, if you remember, Cristina, um she described it as uh blue, a bluish light. Well, as the report started coming in, it was changing color in front of all of the witnesses. So, she was getting uh one said it was green, one said it was blue um a blue green. We had uh bright red as another color. And then um things really got interesting and uh uh I'm going to I'm going to bust this out. This is crazy. It was Lieutenant James Baker. He was from a different police township. He was from Brookfield and the Brookfield Police Department. And so he's listening to the police radio. He's listening to everybody talking. So he goes outside of the police department where there is an abandoned not unused radio tower and he climbs it. He climbs the radio tower, Cristina. And he gets up and he says, "Man, I got to take a better look. I got to see what everybody's talking about. So he climbs to the top of the radio tower and looks and he sees not one, not two, but he sees three craft. And he said that uh they were in a triangle formation, of course, because because it was three, but he said that the middle object was slightly higher than the other two on the side, like a taller craft. Um, and the the crazy turn of events uh for all of this was the government. Right. Here we go. Right. So, you got the FAA, right? And of course, uh, the Air National Guard and the Air Force, Captain John Keac from the Youngstown Reserve Base went on the record and said that there are no planes, experimental or otherwise, flying, period, and just put the kibash on it because everybody had asked, not only dispatch, but the police were were asking these questions and so were um all of the witnesses. that were all calling in. They all know about the uh Youngstown Air Reserve Base and they were go, "Is this an experimental craft? Is this is this the air base? Could it be something flying out of there?" And this went over and over and over again. So, Captain John Kac was contacted and said, "We're not flying anything." the FAA when uh Royanne had contacted the FAA when all of this started to kick off, the FAA said we can see the air base here on our radar in the 60 mile uh diameter that we cover. They are not flying anything out of there right now. So, what was it? It's this is one of the most amazing cases um in all of UFOlogy. And we have You know what it reminds me of? I love your comment. Reminds me of Colonel Halt's recordings in Rendlesham Forest. The cult memo.

Yeah. No, that that's actually a really good comparison of the two because you get this raw emotion. You get these descriptors as well and and so I think it's a really great comparison. One thing to mention about Mr. Baker is that when he when he climbed the tower to get a better vantage point, he sees multiple craft and he tells and it's recorded. He mentions, "These are not planes." Okay, I know what planes look like, but then but then it gets even better cuz he mentions, "I think they're scrambling planes out of the air base to go check them out." That's right. So he referring to that the military, the government, somebody scrambled jets to catch up with these unknown craft in the sky. And it seems that with a lot of very famous cases, we see or we hear encounters of people seeing a UFO and then military jets following very closely next to them, either scrambling to to catch up with them, trying to chase them, trying to beat them to a different location, or they're following them, escorting them. And there are so many different uh theories as to what's going on, but that is one consistent pattern that we see and hear over and over again. So, I think just hearing about Mr. Baker share his sighting uh when it was taking place, like it wasn't it wasn't an aftermath thought. He was seeing everything in the moment he was speaking to dispatch. And he also Yeah. And he also said and which also gets repeated. You have to listen um everyone go out and check out the Trumbull County audio and just listen to it. It is fascinating. But uh he says that they were changing color in unison and you can hear the descriptions from the different police officers um hinting towards that too as well. And uh this happens many times. There is a lot of radio chatter, but one of the things that you hear over and over again is what color did they say it was? No, what I'm looking at is this color. What do you What do you mean? And that that how many times do you hear that? um over the next 60 minutes where there was confusion because the police officers were looking at it in real time, but the calls were coming in and other officers reported different colors. And then of course, uh James Baker uh sees three of them at the same time, all not one object, but three, and they were changing color in unison, like they were locked in and communicating with each other.

The other the other part about this is how low this was flying. And even the original callers that came in, Royanne, she says, "Okay, is it coming straight down?" And and the caller goes, "No, man. It's at an angle." So that changes even Roy, but it changes the way that you're looking at it, too. And the lady that called in, she called in three times. She said it was skimming over the top of the trees, uh, 50 feet above the trees, and that's what all of the police officers said. They had a hard time, uh, following the object because it was so low that they didn't see it until like they turned a corner and got a certain angle and there it was in front of them. One report after another stated the exact same thing. They didn't see it and then there it was just above the trees. And they also talk about um really quick before we wrap this up. Uh one of the officers says, "I got really crappy binoculars." Remember that? And he goes, "Let me let me let me let me see if I can get Yeah, it's it's moving." He says, "It's moving. Uh I I can see it moving next to the tree that's uh below it. It's definitely moving." But it's just so funny how uh in the moment that there were a lot of um how do I want to say this because this is a family show. There's a lot of colorful language used in those police dispatch radio calls, wasn't there? There was enough for it to be noticeable.

And as progressed, Royanne's curiosity overcame her initial skepticism. She was laughing at first, but then after getting all this information, not only from the civilians, but from Toby as well, describing these craft, she's like, "I need to go check this out myself." So, when another officer insisted the UFO was near the dispatch office and urged her to step outside, she did exactly that. She called the air base again and this time out of breath from running outside and says this darn thing is in Howland Township now hovering about 50 feet from the ground. Blue and green lights. Some people say they see a red light. Hovers about 50 feet from the ground with no noise. She was seeing this firsthand. And then when when the operator again offered only a phone number to call, Royanne declared with excitement, "I'm going to look at it now myself. You know what? I'm I'm I'm done. I'm done talking to you. You're giving me no information. You're telling me to call this guy and that guy. No, I'm going to check it out for myself." And so then she actually left the dispatch station twice that night to personally observe the phenomenon. And then years later, she would admit that she did indeed see that UFO, but she chose not to report it at the time, 1994, due to the intense stigma surrounding such reports, especially when we're looking at, for instance, the 1966 Portage County incident where policemen chased a UFO over state lines and they were very quickly ridiculed. Lonnie Zamora as well. You know, before this before, maybe before the 2000s, um, policemen didn't really have an easy life after talking about UFOs. She knew that. So, she kind of kept her sighting to herself until she finally gave an interview many years later. But when this when this happened, she really transformed from a very skeptical dispatcher to a very almost an excited investigator because Jimmy, as you had mentioned, she started asking more pointed questions both to the FBA, to the air base, and to the citizens calling in. Okay, what did it look like? Give me more details. Before she was brushing everything off and then she was like, "Wait a second. No, now I'm interested. You gave me a little nibble and now I want the entire cookie.

And that's Yeah. Well, she's she asked the she asked the FAA. One of the uh most amazing parts of of this evening. She asked the FAA. She goes, "Okay, well, can you tell me what to say?" She goes, "I don't want to cause public panic, but but there's got to be a phrase." And that's what she says. There's got to be a phrase I can use, right? And the guy goes, "Hey, man, if it's a UFO, you're talking to the wrong person." And I'll give you some uh I'll give you the 800 number to move on, whatever he said, right? And you can call them tomorrow when they open. But she goes, "No, but I I don't want to cause a public panic." He was like, "I gotta go. I gotta go." it it was just she knew that and she just needed help and she didn't know what to call it and and and how to the words that she kept using over and over again with the police officers. She said that uh channel 33 had already called her and and wanted information and she goes, "Look, I don't want to cause a public panic. I don't want panic here and I got to give it to Royanne." She handled it really, really well. What started off as giggling and laughing in the dispatch office to real concern about a real UFO incident. It's a it's an amazing an amazing case right here in UFOlogy for all of you UFOlogist. Yeah. Nice. Nice. Nice.

And even though there were so many witnesses, we have the audio, we have credible people looking at this, it was quickly brushed off as, oh, what you were seeing were shooting stars cuz in December at night, you're going to see more than usual. But not everyone was buying that explanation. And then, as I had stated at near the beginning of this show is that it was brushed off. This this story was buried so well until one journalist by the name of Kenny Young wanted to get more information actually on a separate case, but the names got confused, the locations got confused, and the journalist Kenny Young got information about this UFO encounter by mistake. I love that. That's that's like I feel like a highlight for journalists getting the a juicier story than you expected and it wasn't even your intention to go that path but he was he was pushed there really.

Yeah. And you have Moro up on the screen and I want to thank you for another great show Cristina and everybody that's here with us. Um, Maro uh later in a in another call, she says, "Well, what did it look like?" And he said, he said, "Look, it was just giant and red and lit up the sky. It was glowing just 50 feet off the ground." That's that's extraordinary, isn't it? and and to have everything else happen after that. But that was the only way that he could describe it that it was just giant 50 feet off the ground glowing in the sky in front of him. Absolutely incredible. What a great show. You know, it's it's cases like this, Cristina, that always keep my interest and and jumping into these. Um, I've always been fascinated with this case and uh for yes, Roswell and yes, Zamora and we could look at Rendlesham and and all of the famous cases, but it's cases like this that absolutely fascinate me. So everybody, Trumbull County, Ohio, 1994. This is a really fun rabbit hole and that has one chunk of evidence out there and that is an hour, an hour and a half of 911 dispatch and radio chatter for you to listen to. It's incredible.

And I will place that link in the description box below for you to for those to listen during their own time because it is definitely worth listening to. Jimmy, thank you so much for being on the show today. Who do you have on Fade to Black tonight? Tonight it is just what we're doing right now. Citizen scientist. Nice.
