On November 9th, 1979, a Scottish forestry worker's routine morning inspection turned into a terrifying encounter that would make history. Bob Taylor wasn't looking for fame when he walked into Dechmont Woods that November morning - but what happened to him became the only UFO incident in Scottish history to trigger a criminal investigation. Physical evidence, torn clothing, and mysterious ground markings left police baffled. Join Cristina Gomez, as we uncover the truth behind Scotland's most thoroughly documented close encounter... one that left marks not just on the ground, but on UFO history itself.

The Deckmont Law case is the only UFO case that turned into a criminal investigation in Scotland. And this encounter has physical evidence, torn clothing, and very mysterious ground markings that left policemen, detectives, and forensic scientists confused. I'm Christina Gomez, and welcome to this episode of UFO Case Studies. Hi, everyone. Welcome to this episode. Thank you for catching this live. And if you enjoy UFO news, updates, case studies, interviews, and more, then this is the channel for you. So if you haven't already, subscribe to this channel to not miss any of the videos I post right here as I post about three videos a week. Let's get into this case because it's so interesting. Honestly, the As I had mentioned at the very beginning, this is the only UFO case that turned into a criminal investigation. So Robert Taylor, better known as Bob Taylor that we're seeing on screen right here, was a six-year-old forestry worker. with the Livingston Development Corporation, and he was very respected in his community. He was known for his honesty, which is going to be very relevant and prevalent for the rest of this episode. And really, the only vice that he had was that he was a smoker. And during this time in nineteen seventy nine, it wasn't even a vice back then. What's yours? Let me know in the comments. Let me know in the live chat. I think for myself, it's probably eating chocolate or ramen. That's kind of my advice. Any kind from the absolute garbage that is pure chemicals to the one that's nicer end. That's my advice. So at about ten thirty a.m. on November ninth, nineteen seventy nine, Taylor was inspecting a newly planted woodland area near the Deer Hill, close to the Dec Mont law, just south of M eight motorway and accompanied by his very adorable red setter dog, Laura. This is an image, by the way. His task was to keep the woodland clear of any stray sheep. This man was just doing his job. Like, that's what he was there to do. Well, then, according to his testimony that he gave in interviews right after the incident, which we're going to get into, and also in the book, The Deckmont Woods UFO Incident, that was written by Malcolm Robinson, who we'll get back to in just a moment. he shared some very interesting details as to what happened to him. Because Taylor parked up his pickup at the Woodlands edge and walked approximately five hundred yards along a path into the forested area. But then upon reaching a clearing, He noticed that his dog appeared spooked by something nearby. How many times have we heard that? It's usually dogs, sometimes horses. We've heard of birds as well, where they're just in a situation, they're in an environment, and they know something isn't right. So either they go super quiet or they are barking like mad. Now, in this case for Laura... Bob's dog, she was completely spooked. She didn't really know how to handle the situation. And to his astonishment, Taylor, Bob, observed a metallic dome-shaped object hovering over the clearing. Here is a drawing that he did soon after the incident. And it was accompanied, listen to this, by an odor resembling burning brakes. And he described the UFO as approximately twenty feet in diameter, about six point four meters with a gray surface featuring a rough sandpaper like texture. Usually when we hear of cases like this or people see a UFO, maybe they even touch it. Right. It's smooth. It's metallic. It's perfect. There there are no welding lines. There are no nuts, nothing like that. But his description said that it felt like rough sandpaper. And I know that you're familiar with how that feels. You probably... cleaned up some wood before. Maybe you went to the beach and just touched sand for the first time. It has that rough feeling. You know what it feels like. And Taylor noted that sections of the craft seem to disappear and reappear, suggesting technology beyond conventional understanding, especially in nineteen seventy nine. But then the object featured a kind of like a fling with an attached propeller to it. And we can see a little of those details right here in this image. But then, guys, it just gets more crazy. It just gets more strange because he didn't just see one UFO. He saw three of them because suddenly two smaller objects emerged from the large UFO. And now Laura is barking like mad, like she is trying to maybe protect Bob. Who knows? But she just won't stop. And then these smaller objects, which Bob described as two robots shaped like landmines but with longer spikes that they used for walking, rolled towards him. So these little spikes right here, they weren't floating, these smaller probe-like objects. They were rolling towards him. I think that is much scarier, in my opinion, than them floating towards you, is when they are rolling like in a horror movie, getting super close to you, to the point that these super long spikes actually punctured Bob's legs, created holes in his trousers and in his underwear. Yeah, but not only that, he described these long protrusions from these smaller craft as sucking or making like these kind of plopping noises as they moved across the ground or... which added this very eerie sensory dimension to the entire encounter. I am telling you, this is so much scarier than just having some craft floating in the sky, you know, maybe following a laser like a cat that people have tried to do in the past, right? Them rolling to you, making sounds while they do it, I'd be scared. And this guy, this guy was just as terrified. Why? Well, now he's, he doesn't know what to do. So these, these objects grab him by the legs and drag him toward the larger UFO. This story is on something insane, but it only gets more strange as we continue. I'm actually just going to leave that sentence right there. So with all this fear, these things rip into his pants. He passes out. He passes out, maybe out of pain, maybe out of fear, maybe out of both. And then he's gone for a good while. only recalling a hissing noise and this very acidic smell before blacking out entirely. Now, when he regained consciousness much later, the objects had vanished in this clearing. So he was due. This man just went out at ten a.m. to do his job. OK, that's all he wanted to do was to pay the bills. But instead, he got this very strange encounter. He sees these things. They roll towards him. They rip his pants. He passes out out of fear, maybe out of pain as well. Then he wakes up and these things are gone. And he's in the middle of a clearing. He's surrounded by trees, but there's a clearing where this took place. And I'll show you an image a little bit later. But the pants that he was wearing here is here. Oh, wait, I'll show it to you. Here are the actual pants. In this image, you can see that hole right there. They're thick. They were thick and they were torn. And he was covered in cuts and these kind of like grazes as if someone had attempted to pull him upward towards the sky. Now his legs ached and he found himself unable to recall anything. what happened and he was unable to also call for help so he returns to his vehicle and he discovered that his car wouldn't work we did a whole show a few weeks ago about ufos terrorizing motor vehicles And there have been a lot of cases where a UFO is seen, and then the car engine just stops in its entirety. Once the UFO passes by, the car starts working up again. Now, not everyone is as lucky. In this case for Bob, and this, by the way, is the author that wrote the book about this encounter. This is Malcolm Robinson. who's had possession of these pants for twenty plus years probably more than that now And in this case, for Bob, that's his wife, he wasn't lucky. So he goes to his car. It's not starting. He's in a panic. He is freaking out. His dog is freaking out. So he does probably what any sane person would do. And he just instinctively walked the one mile back home. However, he wasn't in a healthy state. So maybe it wasn't really that smart to walk a mile on your own. As soon as he got home, he nearly collapses through the front door upon arrival. And his wife, Mary, just assumed he had been assaulted by a person. So he calls, so she calls the police. And officers responded promptly. They treated the situation as a potential crime. But when Bob tried to tell her what happened, Mary, you won't believe this. There was this craft and these, like, little probe-y thingies that were making, like, little sucking noises. came close to me and pricked me and it was so terrifying mary in nineteen seventy nine she says um uh saucers and spaceships they don't exist I'm gonna call the doctor and get you checked out That's literally what she said in the interview image that you're seeing right here. I placed the whole interview in the description box below for you as well because it is very interesting. The way that she really brushed off her husband of, you're out of your mind. You must have been assaulted by a person. I'm going to call the doctor. I'm going to call the police to get you checked out and released. figure out what happened to you because she had also mentioned that his face was completely pale. He was covered up in a few scratches. He had a big one right on the chin area, a big red gash. And she was obviously worried about her husband, but didn't at first believe the words that were coming out of his very tired mouth. This man almost collapsed when he got home. He looked very sick. His mouth was very dry. He could barely speak. But he ended up telling his wife, out of all the words to pick, I saw a spacecraft. And that was it. And she was like, no, I'm not buying this one. But the physical and emotional toll on Bob was profound and it was lasting. Because beyond the immediate visible torn clothes and the little scratches, he did suffer severe headaches, a burning sensation on the chin where Mary had noticed there was this kind of cut, and a persistent... acidic sour taste in his mouth that lasted for days afterward. And then the psychological impact proved equally significant because he became withdrawn following the incident, was plagued by reoccurring nightmares, and felt very isolated from his community due to the skepticism and the occasional ridicule he faced because right after this happened somehow in some way the media got whiff of it and they attack him like a pack of hyenas that haven't eaten for days and they say what happened tell me everything So he does a few, he does, I think, like two interviews or so for the television. He does just one or two newspapers telling a story as well. But he really wanted to seclude himself from the event that took place in November of nineteen seventy nine. He never wrote a book about it. They say he never made money off of this case, but he just he encountered something. He happened to be at the right place or the wrong place. at the right or wrong time, and it went public. But there's more to this. Because these personal consequences often overlooked in accounts of the incident really, I think, humanize the story and emphasize how deeply this encounter affected his life. This right here, this screenshot, is the doctor that... looked at him that that checked him out from when mary made that phone call of hey my husband just got assaulted can you come on over this is one you could do those house calls right that's not a thing anymore but she could back then so the doctor gordon adams checks his heart rate, checks his blood pressure, does a visual evaluation of how he looks. And he couldn't pinpoint anything like he looked overall decently normal. Yes, he was pale. Yes, he had some scratches on him, but his heart rate didn't say any thing that it was abnormal. His breathing was fine. His abdomen was fine. His lungs were fine. All these everything was checking off. Everything looked great. So Dr. Adams kind of looks over at the wife, Mary, and says, I don't really know what to tell you. However, we're lucky that the police are getting involved and they are conducting a proper investigation. That's what he said. So the initial... like initially suspecting Taylor had been assaulted. According to his wife, police had made like very, a very surprising discovery upon examining the scene in which this took place. And I have the image here. Let me show it to you. It's not great, but just bear with me. We're going to give you some details to this image. Now you're like, this just looks like a Brown man. Like a very not so colorful picture. I know, but this is meant to be a hole in the ground that was taken. This is why it's important. It was taken by a local detective. All right. And there's going to be another image, kind of like a rendition as well. That I'll show you in just a moment. But here, there were these ladder-like impressions that suggested a multi-ton object had landed vertically, yet no track showed how it arrived or left. These markings in the ground were just there. And then they were gone. Let me show you the image just to give you a better idea. Here are all the markings that we're seeing. All these little circles are where all the markings were. If you can see from this image, I can't use my finger here, but I can do it like this. There are no other markings on how it got into this clearing or it leaving this clearing. Now, this was a rendition created by the detective at the time who took a bunch of pictures of all these holes in the ground, but he needed a better visual. So he went ahead and created a sketch, and then the sketch turned into this sort of image. But it gets even better. Because we don't hear this that often, this level of seriousness on a case like this. Because then there were forensic tests on Bob's trousers, pants, that revealed that no animal or any kind of plant created those holes. Dun, dun, dun. The forensic scientist also said, here's that image again, I'll show it to you, also had mentioned that it was something mechanical that created these holes based off of how the hole was created. If it was an animal, if it was a plant, the holes would have been pulled down or to the side. But these holes, according to the forensic scientist, said these holes were It was as if he was pulled up into the air, creating these tears in his pants. Dun, dun, dun. I know. It's pretty cool stuff. How often, how often do we ever get to hear a forensic scientist getting involved in a UFO investigation? Almost never. You might get like one of those little two touches, right? They're usually buried. You won't find that information publicly. But in this case, for this guy right here, this is a monumental case. So this evidence, it baffled investigators because no other tracks led in or out of the clearing and no evidence. like a corporation-owned vehicles that match the dimensions of the impressions? Because the detectives, the policemen, the forensic scientists are looking to see, okay, is it a hoax? Are there any... Is there any tech? Is there any type of machinery that could have made these deep indentations in the ground? And they couldn't find anything, at least locally. So forensic analysis of the scene confirmed that the strange ground markings defied explanation by any known machinery or vehicles in the area. And additionally... Detailed analysis of Taylor's clothing conducted as part of the assault investigation. That's why these people were even getting involved is because that's how it was labeled as an assault. It revealed no foreign substances that might explain his injuries. Effectively ruling out mundane causes like animal attacks or plant toxins. I like where this is going. How often, how often do we get a juicy case like this and we get a bunch of data to back it up? Just a very level-headed, serious form of investigation. For the most part. Now, the explanations that were possibly given... They're not so good. They were like hypothesis. Disgusting in the sense of how they explained it, which I'll get to that a little bit later. But the detective constable Ian Wark, this guy right here, later told the BBC that the unusual ground markings seem to have, quote, just arrived as though a helicopter or something had landed from the sky. The police report noted the marks indicated an object of several tons had stood there, but there was nothing to show that it had been driven or towed away to that clearing and away from that clearing. Chris says this is why this case is one of the best. It's I wish it was more famous. It's a it's an incredible case. Nice, John, aside. I feel like that's appropriate for today, talking about Scotland, wearing a kilt at your wedding. Love it. Oh, more kilts being worn by, like, for Philip, by Philip, for instance. Nice. And then Police Constable William Douglas wrote in his report, quote, There appeared to be no rational explanation for these marks. And then upon careful investigation, these impressions didn't match any other vehicles in the area. So we had a constable state this. We had a detective state this. And then we also had... The main witness, Bob, state this of it wasn't anything mundane. I know what I saw. And the thoroughness of the police investigation really, really underscores the seriousness with which authorities approach the case, despite the unusual nature. Because in seventy nine, if you said I had a UFO sighting, they wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole. They wouldn't. But Mary, being the smart wife or not that she was, she labeled it as an assault. Therefore, the police had they were required to do an investigation. And unable to identify another explanation, police classified the event and how they wrote it down was just as a common assault, but with an unknown assaulter. So that part was pretty unique in the records of, okay, this person got assaulted, but by whom? We don't know. And Bob had stated, I don't think they were out to do me any harm, but I was very frightened. You know, I'm a countryman and I've never seen anything like this before. And I was mesmerized by that thing that was just sitting about twelve feet away from me. That right there, that little quote that he had mentioned in interviews and in the book as well. To me, it sounds similar to the Travis Walton case, not only because he was working in the forest like Travis Walton, who was a logger, but for Travis, years later, he said, they weren't there to harm me. I just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. He didn't think that originally, but he did after really contemplating the encounter that he had. I feel like we are seeing some similar patterns with this case as well. Well, the case was officially recorded, as I had mentioned, as a common assault with an unknown person that assaulted them. It just really made it a unique entry in the UK police records of how... How could you get that as an answer but not know who did it, right? Someone give me an answer because it does sound rather strange. Marty says logging is very dangerous work, but Bob Taylor didn't sign up for this. No, he did not. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time. But... Looking at his background, looking at his credibility a little bit, you know, central to understanding this case is really appreciating Bob Taylor's character. Because it was described by those who knew him. He was a very quiet and unassuming man with no prior interest in UFOs or even the paranormal phenomenon. And Taylor had nothing to gain but confidence. a good amount to lose, especially by coming forward with this insane claim. Guys, I just saw three UFOs. Two of them made this sucking sound and they punctured me. And then I passed out. And then I told my wife and it was just a hot mess. Yeah, that's a pretty crazy case. People overall probably aren't going to believe you. But his credibility was repeatedly affirmed by family members and by work colleagues. His boss, Malcolm Drummond, provided a particularly telling perspective when he stated, quote, I don't believe in anything from outer space. The only conclusion that I can come up to is that it must have been a man-made object, some sort of secret machine. So for Taylor, he really hesitated to report the incident, especially because Bob, the boss, not his name isn't Bob, but his boss, Malcolm, he was one of the first to take the phone calls from Mary because Mary called the doctor, the police, and Bob's boss as well. So in this case, he was really hesitant to to report the incident fearing mockery and a reluctance that friends and family said reflected his unassuming nature as well. But he went ahead and he did it anyway. So media coverage and the public response was very interesting because local newspapers, here's one of those images, broke the story first story first and the livingston post secured a full interview with taylor who had he he had done a few interviews after that but we can see the screenshot here of this report says my brush with aliens what a great title if you ask me And Chris, thank you so much for the super sticker and supporting the channel. I really appreciate that. If you're enjoying the show, hit that like button right down below. That is another great way to support the channel as well. And subscribe if you haven't already. So when we're looking at this particular interview that was given... he one thing that really stood out over and over again was that he didn't he didn't want to come forward he didn't want to tell people what happened to him and his family and his friends and his boss kept I would say um they kept mentioning that he was an honest man. He would, he would never make a prank about this. He was an unassuming man. Like why, what does he have to gain from that? So that was one thing that kept being pushed over and over and over again. But following these initial reports and with Taylor firmly maintaining his account because he was interviewed three times by the detective and every single time the story remained the same. And if you know anything about being interrogated by a policeman or usually by a detective, they will ask you the same question over and over again in different ways. in a different format in different wording but the same question to see if you slip up to see if you are lying and you can't really make out the question being asked properly it's the same kind of deal where they also try to ask questions out of order or from the end to the beginning because if it's a lie usually it's more difficult to formulate your story if you're going out of order However, if it really did happen, he actually had the memories, it's easier. It's not easy, but it is easier. So the detective used that to his advantage when doing the interrogations against Bob, but he did pretty well with flying colors. Every single time he got questioned, he gave the same answers. And then... This is also interesting, the timing of this, because just two years earlier, Steven Spielberg's Close Encounter of the Third Kind had really popularized the concept of alien encounters. And now an ordinary Scottish man claimed to have experienced something decently similar. And from what we know about Close Encounters of the Third Kind, love it, hate that movie, that part doesn't really matter. What matters is that ever since that came out, it set a foundation for genuinely millions of people to feel reassured about their encounter, to get excited about the phenomenon. And it was a real stepping stone for the public what it comes to this topic. Now, I think Today, people brush it off of, oh, it's just another movie. It's not a big deal. But during that time frame in the seventies, it was a different dynamic. Yes, you were getting some good sci-fi movies, but nothing like Spielberg. And luckily this guy had, Bob had watched the movie and maybe that gave him a little bit of courage to go out publicly with sharing what happened to him. As for the explanations, this is where I rolled my eyes a little bit earlier of like, ugh, the explanation. There were a few. But if you watch these shows and you know the things that I like and dislike, the explanation that I probably despise the most for any UFO encounter is, ugh, what you were seeing was Venus. Yeah. Yeah, we got that as a possible answer. I don't know how three objects making sucking sounds could be Venus because of some kind of mirage. It hurt. It really hurt when I read that as an explanation, as a possible explanation. It wasn't the definitive answer that was written in the paperwork, but there were a few skeptics that joined the team. Really anonymous. They're debunkers. And they said, no, no, no. What this man was seeing in nineteen seventy nine, it was Venus because of this mirage. It was at the right place at the right time. The clouds were perfectly aligned to where they needed to be and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. of all the explanations like why do they have to stick to venus over and over again yeah p says venus is very active it seems like it and obviously so many people are getting it confused with the ufo that can either move at hundreds of miles per hour or can touch the ground and puncture your leg and rip your trousers In the short I posted yesterday of Dale Spahr, he was a policeman and they told him that what he saw was Venus. And he chased this through state lines from Ohio to Pennsylvania going a hundred miles per hour. And the explanation was, you must be out of your mind. What you saw in the sky, you and a bunch of other policemen was Venus. And you traveled eighty six miles just to chase a planet. Good luck with that. It hurts like a physically hurts to even have to repeat that. Who believes those explanations? I don't know. Don't ask me. I think genuinely, truly, the Venus explanation is worse than swamp gas. Worse. AJ Raffles, thank you so much for the super chat. It says, you can see from this why witnesses are reluctant to come forward. Oh, yes. Now, in today's world, it's a little bit different, but sixties, seventies and eighties, it was a different time. And for the most part, you would be ridiculed. Dark saying, so great to see you, Pete. It says, this reminds me of the Cisco grave encounter. Ooh, that's a really good connection. And we're going to get to another connection soon. near the end of this episode of something else that this reminded me of as well in this there were some other explanations given here I'll put this image And everyone was trying to explain away what happened. He did have a history linked with meningitis from fourteen years prior. And when he had been treated for headaches, there were there was no evidence of any mini stroke, though advised by the doctor at the time that he never really followed through with the appointment. So he was diagnosed with meningitis fourteen years before and but he didn't go into an appointment to get a further evaluation. And with meningitis, just to give you a little bit of a background, a lot of the times you can suffer from headaches. You can get these level, like similar to epilepsy, similar symptoms. And so people were trying to explain away that what happened to him of his face turning completely white of passing out was the connection to his meningitis. However, here's the however part, He had never had any episodes prior to the encounter or after the encounter of passing out and turning white the way that he did in November of nineteen seventy nine. So that was brushed off as an explanation, at least amongst himself and his close friends and family. But there was also the very common hallucination theory. I was like, oh, what you saw was all in your mind, which. how many times have we heard that it I think can work sometimes okay like sure people are imaginative and you can actually tell yourself that you're sick and then you produce sick symptoms your brain is is incredible it can do those kinds of things but when you're always using the hallucination theory it gets overused, gets old. And I think it really scrunches people's eyebrows like this of, do you have anything better to give us an explanation, but don't use Venus. Okay. Are you going to give an explanation? Don't use Venus as your scapegoat. Cause gosh, that is dumb. Really is overall. This case is just, it's, It's an incredible one. It's a very famous one in Scotland. And it is the only case that was taken to the level of a criminal investigation. Here is an artist's rendition of what Bob saw that day at ten a.m.. And when I was looking at this, I really thought, what does this sound similar to? Yes, a little bit of Travis. Travis Walton. I took place in Snowflake, Arizona. But there was another one. And maybe you might agree with me. Here's an image of Bob decades later. He actually passed away two years after this interview, which to give you a little background on when he passed, he passed in two thousand and seven at the age of eighty eight. And then this was just a few years before. Here is that book, The Deckmont Woods UFO Incident, which goes into great detail because Malcolm Robinson actually speaks to Bob, conducts interviews, gets a really good understanding of what happened, and even kept his pants down. with him kept bob's pants with malcolm to get further analysis done it's been sent to multiple labs according to malcolm but no one's really found an answer as to what created those holes aside from the only testimony that we have which is from bob but one case that it reminded me of here's here's malcolm here is this one. Maybe it rings a bell to you, too. And that was in May of nineteen sixty seven near Falcon Lake. Stefan or Stefan, however you want to pronounce it, a fifty one year old industrial mechanic and an amateur geologist. While looking for minerals, he happened to observe two disc shaped objects, one of which had landed nearby. And he originally thought it was an American experimental aircraft. But he had noticed several very distinct features, the warm air, the sulfur smell, the mechanical sounds, and the voices from within this object. And so he attempts to communicate in multiple languages to the craft and to those that he thinks are inside, like English, Polish, German, and a few other languages, but there was no response. So Stefan touched the craft's surface. only to receive very severe burns, which we actually can see here in this image. Here's another one as well of the newspaper clipping and another burn mark and how his clothes got burnt a little bit as well. But he suffered from what people think was a type of radiation burn. He got this grid-like pattern on his abdomen. And it was all because he thinks that he because he had touched the craft. He also had other symptoms like weight loss, diarrhea, blackouts and reoccurring circular burns. This was investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Air Force, the U.S. Air Force, and the UFO research organizations that did confirm radiation at the landing site and on his burned clothes as well. While I know it might be somewhat of a stretch, I feel like there's an underlying pattern with these two cases. between Bob, Bob Taylor and this one in Falcon Lake in nineteen sixty seven. So years before the incident that we're talking about here today. And maybe you can also see those connections as well. Cindy says weird burn pattern. It's very strange. It almost looks like an allergy. test test pattern where it's usually on the back but it's in those lines to see what you're allergic to whenever I see this image that's always what comes to mind is an allergy test Out of these two cases that we covered, the last one being very short, which one did you enjoy more?
