After a recent news report of a Michelle Reyes spotting a UFO from her airplane window while flying over New York City near La Guardia Airport, it made me wonder about the frequency of UFO sightings near airports worldwide. While the famous 2006 O’Hare Airport incident might come to mind, it’s shocking to discover that there have been numerous other cases reported from airports across the globe.

In recent years, there has been a surge in reports of UFOs being spotted in close proximity to airports around the globe. These sightings have raised questions about the intentions behind these mysterious appearances and the potential risks they pose to aviation safety.

One of the most recent incidents, according to News Nation, occurred near New York City’s La Guardia Airport on March 25th, 2024, where a Michelle Reyes captured detailed video footage of a UFO from their phone. The video shows a dark, cylindrical object flying near the plane at an altitude of approximately 2,500 feet. This sighting has prompted discussions about why UFOs seem to be attracted to busy airports, with theories ranging from a desire to be seen by humans to an interest in observing our technological advancements.

Ireland

The phenomenon is not limited to the United States. On November 9th, 2018, multiple commercial pilots reported seeing bright lights and fast-moving UFOs off the southwest coast of Ireland. The incident began when a British Airways pilot contacted Shannon Air Traffic Control to inquire about potential military exercises in the area, as she had witnessed an object moving at an estimated speed of Mach 2. According to the BBC the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) investigating reports and a spokesperson for Shannon Airport declined to comment on the incident.

Brazil

Perhaps one of the most intriguing cases occurred at Sao Paulo Airport in Brazil on May 19th, 1986. Radar systems tracked UFOs moving at incredible speeds, prompting the military to dispatch fighter jets to intercept the objects. According to reports, the UFOs were capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 15, or over 11,000 miles per hour — a feat that remains inexplicable by current human technology. Jets were scrambled, but came back with nothing.

China

In 2010 China has been grappling with a wave of reported UFO sightings, with the most recent incident leading to the temporary shutdown of an airport in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. According to ABC News this marks the eighth such occurrence since June of 2010, highlighting the increasing frequency of these mysterious aerial phenomena. On September 11 of 2010, at approximately 8 p.m., air traffic controllers at the Baotou airport observed peculiar, erratically moving lights in the sky, forcing them to divert several passenger jets for about an hour. Intriguingly, the Hohhot Air Traffic Management Bureau reportedly detected the object on radar as well. The Chinese government, while previously attributing similar sightings to military exercises, has denied the occurrence of this latest incident altogether, adding to the growing mystery surrounding these events. The Baotou incident closely follows another high-profile UFO sighting that led to the closure of Xiaoshan Airport in Hangzhou on July 7 of the same year, where a flight crew preparing for descent noticed an unidentified object, prompting aviation authorities to ground outbound flights and redirect inbound ones. Earlier that same day, Hangzhou residents captured photographs of a hovering object bathed in golden light with a comet-like tail, further fueling speculation about the nature and origin of these UFOs.

As more UFO sightings near airports come to light, the international community is left with more questions than answers. Are these incidents indicative of extraterrestrial interest in our world, or could they be the result of advanced, classified human technology? Regardless of their origin, the potential for these objects to disrupt air travel and compromise passenger safety has become a growing concern for aviation authorities worldwide.
