Sky Sailors: The 740s Airship Incident at Clonmacnoise

In the 740s, an unusual event recorded in the “Annals of Ulster” and other medieval documents took place at the Clonmacnoise monastery. According to these accounts, monks witnessed a “ship” floating in the air, from which an anchor was dropped, snagging on a monastery structure. A crew member descended the anchor line, struggling as though submerged in water, in a bizarre spectacle observed by the assembled monks. The situation escalates when the monks attempt to assist the struggling man, who then cuts the anchor rope, releasing himself and allowing the ship to depart.

The 1235 UFO Witnessed by Samurai

In the year 1235, according to the medieval Japanese text, the Azuma Kagami, General Yoritsune and his troops experienced something strange while encamped for the night. The soldiers observed an unusual display in the sky: lights dancing through the night sky, looping around each other for several hours. This unexpected spectacle naturally alarmed the general and his men, prompting Yoritsune to seek an explanation for what they had witnessed. He tasked his most astute advisers with investigating the event, demanding they provide a rational explanation for the aerial display.

The advisers’ conclusion to the general’s inquiry might sound familiar to those who have followed modern-day UFO sightings and their subsequent investigations. They reported back to Yoritsune, assuring him there was nothing to fear from the lights seen in the sky. Their analysis determined the phenomenon to be “completely natural,” and that “it’s the wind that is making the stars sway”. Sounds similar the the explanations of weather balloons, drones, and swap gas, doesn’t it..? 

The 1561 Celestial Phenomenon Over Nuremberg

On April 14, 1561, in over Nuremberg, Germany eyewitnesses reported seeing a spectacle resembling an aerial battle, complete with objects shaped like orbs, crosses, cylinders, and a sinister black arrow-like vessel. The climax seemed to be a significant crash outside the city limits. The event was immortalized in a woodcut broadsheet by Hans Glaser, capturing the public’s imagination and concern. Glaser’s commentary on the event, “Whatever such signs mean, God alone knows,” reflects the mixture of awe and uncertainty that surrounded the occurrence. 

Governor Winthrop’s 1639 Diary Entry

In 1639, Governor John Winthrop, a leader of the Massachusetts Bay Colony documented a UFO sighting. In his diary, Winthrop detailed an incident involving James Everell, described as “a sober, discreet man,” and two companions who, while rowing in the Muddy River, witnessed a large, erratic light illuminating the night sky. This light, described as flaming up to three yards square (about 10 feet) and taking the shape of a pig when moving, exhibited unnatural behavior by darting swiftly over a distance of approximately two miles between the rowers and Charlestown. The sighting, which lasted between two to three hours, was corroborated by “diverse other credible persons.” However, the event took a perplexing turn when the light vanished, leaving the men inexplicably upstream without any memory of navigating against the tide or wind.

The 1665 Stralsund Aerial Phenomenon

On July 8, 1665, the Stralsund residents were astonished to see the sky above them fill with an array of spherical objects of varying sizes. These spheres exhibited a complex dance of movements, sometimes moving independently, at other times interacting in what appeared to be a meticulously choreographed aerial display. Eyewitnesses likened the scene to a skirmish among the spheres, with smaller ones advancing towards and retreating from the larger entities. While some reports noted the eerie silence of the spectacle, others omitted any mention of sound. The event reached its zenith with the emergence of a significantly larger, dark object among the spheres, described by some as resembling a “great man of war,” akin to a massive ship. This formidable presence seemed to command the smaller spheres, which were observed merging into the larger object or vanishing from sight. The incident unfolded over several hours, captivating the entire populace of Stralsund, and gradually dissipated.
